Williamwath Bridge
Three riveted iron spans on red sandstone piers carry the Lochmaben road over the River Annan, built by the Stevenson family of lighthouse engineers.
At the north east corner of the parish, the Lochmaben road crosses the River Annan on three riveted iron spans carried on red sandstone piers with pointed cutwaters. It is industrial and elegant at once, and unlike anything else here.
It was built in two goes, and both are recorded on plaques on the bridge itself. The piers and abutments are the work of D and T Stevenson in 1850. The iron plate girder spans were added by J and A Leslie in 1882.
The name worth noticing is Stevenson. Five years after building these piers, David and Thomas Stevenson were appointed engineers to the Northern Lighthouse Board, the family firm that lit the whole coast of Scotland. Thomas Stevenson was the father of Robert Louis Stevenson. The bridge is Category B listed.
