Smithy House

The old smithy and village Post Office in Carrutherstown, now a holiday let that sleeps up to nine, with a hot tub and a welcome for dogs.

A note from the owner – We purchased Smithy House in November 2020 and lovingly renovated it into a holiday let, while retaining its original character and links to Carrutherstown’s past.

Built in 1816, the property was originally a blacksmith’s business before later becoming the village Post Office and shop. The original post box remains outside the front door today. The cottage was once three small dwellings, which have since been combined to create a surprisingly spacious holiday home, comfortably accommodating up to nine guests.

During the renovation, we chose to celebrate the building’s history, incorporating black-and-white décor and subtle references to both its blacksmith and Post Office heritage.

We are originally from Annan and have family in Carrutherstown, so the area has always been close to our hearts. Smithy House is marketed through Sykes Cottages, although many of our bookings come directly from returning guests. We’ve even welcomed the same family for Christmas and New Year since we first opened.

The hot tub is a big favourite, and we’re also delighted to welcome four-legged guests, as Smithy House is dog friendly.
